Fully Booked Isn't the Same as Sustainable: A Mid-Summer Check-In for FHPs

If you're a foot health practitioner, you probably already know that August isn't the quiet month people assume it is — and this August, less than most. With more than half of England now officially in drought and a run of heatwaves that's shown no real sign of breaking, the heat has become part of the working conditions rather than just background weather. Sandal season, summer weddings, holidays that finally give clients the time to deal with the nail they've been ignoring since spring — for a lot of us, this is one of the busiest stretches of the year, and the heat itself is adding to the caseload: swelling, sandal blisters, cracked and heat-dried skin.

That's not a complaint. A full diary means the business is working. But there's a difference between a full diary and a
sustainable one, and this August is exactly the month that difference tends to show up — usually as exhaustion, a short temper by Thursday, or a nagging sense that you're running the practice rather than the other way round. Working through a heatwave in a treatment room isn't the same as working through an ordinary August, and it's worth treating it that way.

Here's a mid-year check-in using the same three pillars that sit underneath everything in the Flow & Flourish Framework: Align, Design, Grow.

Align: What Are You Actually Building Towards?

Busy season has a way of making decisions for you. You say yes because the slot's there, not because it's the right client at the right time for the right fee. Before the diary fills any further, it's worth asking: does this month's schedule actually reflect what you want your practice to look like — or has it just filled up around whatever came in first?

Alignment isn't a big annual exercise. It's a five-minute question you can ask yourself every few weeks: is this still what I'm building?

## Design: Boundaries Are a Design Choice, Not a Personality Trait

Some practitioners hold firm boundaries easily. Most of us have to design them deliberately, especially in peak season when every "just this once" request feels reasonable on its own.

A few boundaries worth designing on purpose this month:

- A genuine lunch break, protected on the diary like any other appointment
- A cut-off time for same-day or next-day squeeze-ins
- A clear (and calmly held) line on last-minute cancellations during your busiest weeks
- Proper hydration and cooling breaks built into the day, not squeezed in around clients — a treatment room in a heatwave is a different working environment, and it's worth planning for it rather than just enduring it

None of these need to be dramatic. They just need to be decided in advance, rather than negotiated fresh every time someone asks.

Grow: Busy Season Is Data, Not Just Diary Space

A full August tells you something useful: which services, which client types, and which pricing tiers are actually in demand right now. Rather than letting the busyness simply pass you by, it's worth a few notes as you go — which appointments left you energised, which left you flat, and where the fee genuinely reflected the work involved.

That's the raw material for next year's planning. Growth doesn't only come from doing more; it comes from noticing what this season is actually telling you.

The Real Question for August

Not "how do I fit more in" — but "how do I make sure what's already in the diary is sustainable." A full book built on the wrong boundaries is a different thing entirely from a full book built on the right ones.

Early in my career, I measured a good month purely by how full the diary was. It took a lot longer to learn that a full diary and a good month aren't automatically the same thing — and that the gap between them is almost always about boundaries, not bookings.

If pricing is part of what's making boundaries hard to hold, the Fees Calculator is a useful place to start — it's built to help you set fees that mean you don't need to over-fill the diary to make the numbers work.

Here's to a sustainable August.
