What Slowing Down in July Taught Me About Priorities

We're already halfway through July, and I still haven't published my usual beginning-of-the-month post. Life got in the way — as it does, for so many of us, at this time of year.

There's a common assumption that July should be quiet. In reality, for those of us in foot health, it rarely is. Clinics stay full, personal life picks up its own pace alongside it, and somehow the things that usually come first — like sitting down to write — are the first to slip.

I could have let that pass unmentioned. But I think there's something worth sharing in it, rather than glossing over it.

Because here's what I've noticed, both in my own life and in conversations with so many of the practitioners I work with: when things get busy, something has to give. And often the first casualties are the things that feel optional in the moment, even when they matter to us. A newsletter. A bit of admin. Sometimes even the parts of our business we actually enjoy.

The temptation is to push through regardless — keep every plate spinning, and hope nothing drops. But every so often, life asks us to actually stop and take stock, rather than push harder. What's genuinely needed right now, personally and in the business? What can wait a week or two without any real cost? And what have we been doing out of habit rather than because it's still serving us?

That's where I've been the last couple of weeks. Not absent, just recalibrating — working out what needed my attention now, and what could sit a little longer.

I'd ask you the same question. If things have felt full or overwhelming lately, what would it look like to pause, even briefly, and prioritise rather than just power through? Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is take stock before we move forward again.

I'm finding my rhythm again now, halfway through the month — but wanted to be honest about the gap, and share what it taught me along the way.
